“Website SEO is so confusing!”  Ever said that to yourself?  Seems every third person on twitter believes themselves to be a ‘guru’ or ‘expert’ on the topic.

With all the options and all the noise, how can you be sure you’re WordPress site is really optimized?

Infinite SEO is THE one-stop solution for optimizing your WordPress site to achieve the highest search engine rankings possible.

Infinite SEO includes four major components for handling all of your site’s SEO needs in one complete package.

Simply install and activate the plugin to improve your rankings with the default options, or take advantage of our easy-to-use wizard for implementing your own custom SEO strategies.

Step 1: Settings

The Settings panel allows you to choose which steps you want to include in the SEO Set Up Wizard. In most situations you would want to leave all four of the active components checked.

Step 2: XML Sitemap

Easily generate a customized sitemap to include or exclude pages and/or posts, depending on your preference using the Sitemaps panel.

You also have the option to filter your taxonomies and include categories and post tags as you choose.

The XML sitemap helps search engines to have a more structured and efficient way of crawling through your site to index all of your content. It also allows you to direct their path as they crawl – and leave out areas of your site that you don’t wish to promote through search engines.

Step 3: Title & Meta Optimization

Customize how your site appears when search engines find you using the Title and Meta panel.  It provides an interface for easily customizing titles and meta descriptions of your site pages.

Leave it on the default settings or take full control of your SEO strategy by specifying a selection from a generous list of supported macros, available to you through the help button.

Step 4: SEOmoz Report

Get feedback from the best of the best in SEO using the SEOmoz report panel.

Infinite SEO gives you the opportunity to tap into the powerful SEOmoz API. In a matter of seconds you can be funneling stats and ranking information for your site from the most highly-regarded SEO experts in the industry.

The SEOmoz API provides solid metrics which allow you to verify that the plugin is working to effectively promote your content. The index is never more than a month old, so you are sure to get the freshest look at how your rankings are improving.

Step 5: Automatic Linking

Maintain control of your SEO strategy using the Automatic linking panel.

The automatic linking feature automates deep linking within your site’s post and pages so that crawlers can quickly and easily index all of your content.

Many SEO plugins offer a “one size fits all” approach without allowing you the option to employ a specific strategy for your website’s unique needs.

Infinite SEO offers you fine-grained control of the automatic linking of your posts, pages and custom content types with the ability to customize and/or ignore keywords that you specify.

Usage

Start by reading Installing plugins section in our comprehensive WordPress and WordPress Multisite Manual if you are new to WordPress.

To install:

1.  Download the plugin file
2.  Unzip the file into a folder on your hard drive
3.  Upload /wpmu-dev-seo/ folder to /wp-content/plugins/ folder on your site
4.  Login to your admin panel for WordPress or Multisite and activate the plugin:

  • For WordPress Multisite installs – visit Network Admin -> Plugins and Network Activate the plugin.
  • On regular WordPress installs – visit Plugins and Activate the plugin.

Note: If you have an older version of the plugin installed in /mu-plugins/ please delete it.

Network activate plugin

  • That’s it! No configuration necessary!

Now allow site-by-site control when network activated!

You can toggle between these per-site or network modes by setting a “WDS_SITEWIDE” define to false. The best place to do this is in your wp-config.php file, because it won’t be overwritten by updates. So, this would be the basic workflow:

1) While in network-wide (default) mode, make your selection of which tabs you wish to allow your admins to change.
2) Once you’re done with that, open your wp-config.php and add in this line of code:

define( 'WDS_SITEWIDE', false );

3) Instead in network area, the plugin settings pages will appear in site admin area of each blog under “Settings”.

Any settings in tabs you mark as inaccessible should be inherited sitewide, but everything your site admins can control should be site-specific.

To Use:

1.  Login to your admin panel for WordPress or Multisite and activate the plugin:

  • For WordPress Multisite installs – visit Network Admin -> Plugins and Network Activate the plugin.
  • On regular WordPress installs – visit Plugins and Activate the plugin.

2.  Once activated a new ‘Infinite SEO’ menu item is added to your dashboard

  • For WordPress Multisite installs – Infinite SEO menu item is added to Settings in the Network Admin dashboard
  • On regular WordPress installs -  Infinite SEO menu item is added to Settings

3.  Go to Infinite SEO in Settings and choose which components you want to include in your SEO Set up wizard

  • In most situations you would want to leave all four of the active components checked.

4.   Choose which user roles you would like to have access to SEO metabox settings.

  • These are the SEO settings available in the edit/create post pages.
  • The options come in handy, especially on a Multisite network to keep things simple for users by letting the Super Admin manage the settings..

5.   Click on the Step 2 tab in your SEO Set up wizard and choose your preferred sitemap options.

  • You will probably want to leave the path and URL to the sitemap at their defaults.
  • Check any items you want excluded from the sitemap and click “Save Settings.”

Customiszing your meta and title data

7.  Click on the Step 4 tab in your SEO Set up wizard and set up your SEOmoz report.

  • ignup for a Free account on SEOmoz.org and then copy and paste your Access ID and Secret Key into the box.
  • You’ll instantly start receiving metrics for your domain.
  • SEOmoz report metrics is also displayed below each individual post and page

Setting up your SEO report

8.  Click on the Step 5 tab in your SEO Set up wizard and set up your automatic linking.

  • Simply check the boxes next to posts, pages, and comments and in the next section check the items you’d like for them to link to.
  • To further filter your links you can include posts, pages and keywords to ignore.
  • The plugin picks up Post Titles, Page Titles, Category Names, Tag Names and other stuff depending on your settings. Suppose you have a post titled “Flower Garden Care” and with the right settings, every mention of the phrase “Flower Garden Care” will be linked to the original post.
  • The “Insert links in” options decide where the links appear in. If Posts and Pages are checked and Comments are not checked, links will appear on Posts and Pages and not comments.
  • The “Link to” options decide what to use as keywords. If you want the plugin to pick up Post Titles and Page Titles automatically and link to them, tick Posts and Pages. The Post Title or Page Title will be used as keyword and every mention of it will be linked to it automatically.
  • Exclude Headings” tells the plugin not to insert links in headings. All h1, h2, h3 and h4 headings are exempted.
  • Ignore posts and pages” is where you tell the plugin not to use specific Posts or Pages as Keywords. For example, you have the About Page and most probably its title is “About”. Now every mention of the word about will be linked to the About page, which is not necessary. This is where you make sure that doesn’t happen. Enter the IDs separated by comma and no space in between, like 91,345,46
  • To find the Post or Page ID, Go to Posts / Pages > All Posts / Pages in your WordPress Admin and then hover over the page/post title (or click on the page/post title), you see the URL is something like yourawesomeblog.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=91&action=edit. The number following post= is the ID, in this case 91.
  • When you do not want to use some Keywords, you can use the “Ignore keywords” box. Suppose you do not want to link to a particular category, just enter the category name here. Separated by commas, no spaces.
  • Custom Keywords” is where you provide additional Keywords. Its self explanatory and examples are included right in the plugin.
  • In the Other Settings, “Process only single posts and pages” when ticked make sure linking happens only on the Single Pages and not on Archive Pages like the Category and Tag Archives.
  • Process RSS feeds” when ticked makes sure the links the plugin insert appear on RSS feeds as well.
  • Case sensitive matching” differentiates keywords based on its case. “Flower Bed” and “flower bed” are different when this is ticked.
  • Prevent duplicate links” makes sure that the keyword is linked only on the first instance of the keyword on the Page or the Post.
