Russian ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin dies – Foreign Ministry

Vitaly Churkin, who served as Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations since 2006, "died suddenly" in New York, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced.
Churkin would have turned 65 on Tuesday.
Before he was appointed to represent Russia at the UN in May 2006, the diplomat served as ambassador to Belgium, ambassador to Canada, and liaison ambassador to NATO and the Western European Union (WEU).
In the 2000s he was ambassador at large at Russia's Foreign Ministry, while in the early 1990s he served as the special representative of the Russian president to the talks on the former Yugoslavia.

Should Afghanistan’s fragile Western-backed regime collapse, the ensuing chaos will send millions of young men flooding into Europe, says UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon.
Fallon told the Munich Security Conference that three to 4 million young men could set out for Europe if the regime falls apart, bringing with them the threat of terrorism.
Fallon insisted that NATO should not pull out or “we here will feel the consequences, very directly.”
“If it was right to go in, it has to be not right to leave before the job is done,” he said in a debate on whether the 15 year mission had been a failure or a success.
“If this country collapsed we here will feel the consequences, very directly. There could be 3, 4 million young Afghan men sent out by their villages to migrate westwards. And they are heading here, they are heading for Germany or Britain.”
“That could be the consequence if this entire country collapses.”
Echoing recent hints by Armed Forces Minister Mike Penning UK troops could be redeployed to the war-torn country, Fallon said, “We are asking the government of Afghanistan and their military to deal with the same situation that we had ten times as many troops to deal with.”
Penning’s comment were not widely reported at the time.
“We have no plans to draw-down, actually there is a possibility that we might uplift because of what we are being asked to do,” he told the Defense Select Committee on February 10.
“I have not been formally asked, but I might as well be honest with the committee. That’s a possibility.”
Penning recently returned from Afghanistan and said he had made the assumption based on conversations with coalition forces.
At the height of the Afghan War there were 9,500 UK troops deployed. Of these, 456 were killed.
There are currently around 500 conventional troops deployed to the country.
Iran launches ‘smart & advanced’ rockets during military exercises

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have launched sophisticated rockets during military exercises, according to Tasnim news agency. It comes just weeks after the US put Iran "on notice" after it test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile.
The "smart and advanced" rockets were launched during three-day military drills which began on Monday in Iran's central desert, AP cited the semi-official Iranian news agency as saying.
Tasnim did not elaborate on the model of the rockets, but said they successfully hit their targets.
The news follows less than three weeks after US President Donald Trump tweeted that Iran had been formally put "on notice" for test-firing a ballistic missile.
The 'notice' came after Iran warned Washington against "creating new tensions" over the missile launch, stating that its missiles are not in violation of United Nations resolutions because they are for defensive purposes, and are not designed to carry nuclear warheads.
Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif appeared to mock the US threat while speaking at a global security conference in Munich on Sunday.
When asked whether Iran was concerned about the possibility of more US sanctions, Zarif prompted laughter from the crowd by stating that "tweet is now very fashionable," in an apparent reference to Trump's affinity for Twitter.
He went on to state that “Iran doesn’t respond well to threats...we don’t respond well to coercion. We don’t respond well to sanctions, but we respond very well to mutual respect..."
Zarif added that "everybody tested us for many years – all threats and coercions were imposed on us," while stressing that the "concept of crippling sanctions" didn't stop Iran from acquiring thousands more centrifuges which are used for enriching uranium.
The statement comes amid Trump's hard-line rhetoric against Tehran, with the US leader saying he will not be as "kind" as his predecessor Barack Obama.
Trump has stated that military options are not off the table when it comes to Iran, and has repeatedly criticized the nuclear accord agreed between Tehran and six world powers as "disastrous" and the "worst deal ever negotiated." He told an American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference in May that his “number one priority” was to dismantle the deal.
The deal – which was agreed between Tehran and the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and China in 2015 – outlines Iran's commitment to reduce its nuclear program in exchange for the six world powers lifting international sanctions against the country.
Tensions were further strained between Washington and Tehran in January, when Trump issued a travel ban on citizens from seven mainly-Muslim countries, including Iran. Tehran called the ban "insulting" and vowed to take "reciprocal measures."
Russia overtakes Saudi Arabia as world's top crude producer

Russia has once again taken the crown from Saudi Arabia as the world’s biggest oil producer. The two countries are global leaders in crude production by a wide margin, trading the top spot from time to time.
Russia produced 10.49 million barrels per day (bpd) in December, down 29,000 barrels a day from November. Saudi Arabia’s output dropped to 10.46 million bpd from 10.72 million bpd, according to Monday's data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative in Riyadh.
This was the first time Russia became top producer since March 2016. Riyadh’s crude exports fell to eight million bpd from 8.26 million bpd in November, the biggest monthly slide since May 2003.
The United States is in third place, producing 8.8 million bpd in December. At the same time, America is neck-and-neck with China as the world's largest crude importer, buying 7.88 million bpd of crude last year.
The growth in US production mostly came from the Texas’ Permian Basin and Eagle Ford regions, which have better quality oil. However, local refineries can’t process it because they are geared to process poorer quality crude from Canada and Venezuela. The US producers export the higher quality oil and import what they need from abroad.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and oil producers outside the cartel led by Russia have agreed to prop up prices by cutting production by almost 1.8 million barrels per day during the first half of the year to curb a global oversupply.
On Monday, Brent crude was trading at $56.18 per barrel, while the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate rose to $53.69.

Far-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos has sparked outrage on social media after apparently “defending” pedophilia.
The British Breitbart news editor has been accused of “defending child abuse” after saying “we get hung up” on it.
“We get hung up on this sort of child abuse stuff to the point where we are heavily policing consensual adults,” said Yiannopoulos.
“In the homosexual world, particularly, some of those relationships between younger boys and older men – the sort of ‘coming of age’ relationship – those relationships in which those older men help those young boys discover who they are and give them security and safety and provide them with love and a reliable, sort of rock, where they can’t speak to their parents.”
Yiannopoulos was speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC )in Maryland. He made the comments while discussing instances of abuse he allegedly suffered at the hands of a priest at school when he was in his teens.
Reacting to the comments, several conservatives have called for Yiannopoulos to be scrapped from the CPAC’s list of speakers.
Yiannopoulos has denied defending pedophilia, saying he is “completely disgusted” by child abuse and that those accusing him of being “soft” on the subject are “idiots” trying to “discredit” him from “establishment Republicans.”
His “outing” of pedophiles through his journalism is a “peculiar strategy for a supposed pedophile apologist,” he quipped.
Although he agreed the current UK age of sexual consent should remain at 16, Yiannopoulos said there are people who agree to sex at a younger age.
The Breitbart news editor, who is a rising star of the so-called ‘alt-right’ movement, has already been banned for life from Twitter after he described Ghostbuster film actress Leslie Jones as “barely literate” and a “dude.”
He also claimed Lena Durham, star of TV show ‘Girls,’ represents the American “insane” liberals, and that the Democrats were the “party of Lena Durham.”
“These people [liberals] are mental, hideous people, and the more that America sees of Lena Dunham, the fewer votes that the Democratic Party is going to get.”
Berkeley University in California recently cancelled a speech by Yiannopoulos after thousands of students violently protested against him speaking on campus.
In response Yiannopoulos posted a statement on Facebook saying “the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down.”

US intelligence services have made it clear to the media that they regularly tap the communications of the Russian ambassador to the US, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
“In connection with the scandal that was built up around Trump’s adviser, General Flynn, US intelligence services told journalists absolutely officially, though anonymously – that our ambassador’s [Sergey Kislyak] communications are routinely tapped,” Lavrov told journalists.
The tapping includes “his reports to Moscow about his activities in Washington,” the minister added.
Lavrov also called to pay attention to the activities of those who attempt “to survey any processes all over the globe, including via means that are known to be not quite legitimate.”

National Security Advisor Michael Flynn resigned on February 13 after The Washington Post printed an alleged US intelligence insider’s leak of a phone conversation he had before taking office with a Russian ambassador (analysis here, here, here). Such a leak is a federal felony.

U.S. deploys carrier to contentious South China Sea
The United States deployed aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to patrol the increasingly contentious South China Sea on Saturday despite Beijing’s warnings not to challenge its sovereignty in the resource-rich sea.
In a statement, the Navy described the launch as the beginning of “routine operations” in the South China Sea. China claims most of the sea as its own, despite overlapping territorial and jurisdictional claims from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.
On Wednesday, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang denounced advance news of the deployment at a news conference.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has issued new orders to agency heads that considerably expand the number of immigrants who can be detained and deported under new executive orders President Donald Trump signed last month.
Under Kelly’s orders, which were contained in two memorandums distributed to agency heads on Friday, hundreds of thousands more immigrants in the United States illegally will be subject to what’s known as expedited removal proceedings to quickly get them out of the country.
The order also would affect thousands of children who arrived in the United States as “unaccompanied minors” and were subsequently reunited with a parent living in the country illegally. Those children would no longer be protected against deportation, and their parents would be subject to criminal prosecution if they had paid human traffickers to bring their children across the border – a common scenario now.

In at least five states, roughly 60 people lost their jobs this week after they skipped work to participate in the “Day Without Immigrants” protest on Thursday, according to local media reports.
The protest, which was aimed at highlighting the importance of immigrants to the U.S. economy, called on all immigrants to not work or buy anything Thursday and succeeding in shutting down businesses across the country, according to CNN. It is unclear, however, how many people participated in the strike, according to ABC News.
Still, around five dozen people say their participation in the protest cost them their employment as businesses fired them for not showing up to work.

Likewise the bacteria in the Gypsum crystals. No doubt any life in Titan's methane pools or floating in the gas giants' atmosphere will be quite comfortable where they evolved.
We should not assume that life is only to be found in conditions on the present surface of the Earth.

Two weeks ago, German finance minister Wolfgang Schauble confirmed Donald Trump's charge that the Euro is far "too low" for Germany, but said he is unable to do anything about it and instead blamed Mario Draghi. “The euro exchange rate is, strictly speaking, too low for the German economy’s competitive position,” he told Tagesspiegel on February 5. “When ECB chief Mario Draghi embarked on the expansive monetary policy, I told him he would drive up Germany’s export surplus?.?.?.?I promised then not to publicly criticise this [policy] course. Norway Central Banker Warns Of Massive 50% Drop In Wealth Fund Assets To Cover Budget Deficits
Back in August, we noted that, for the first time since it's creation in 1996, the Norwegian government had started raiding its sovereign wealth fund in 2016 to cover government deficits. Then in October the Nordic country revealed plans to massively increase withdrawals by over 25% in 2017, to $15 billion, to cover a budget hole that was expected to be roughly 8% of GDP.
That said, Norway's ultimate GDP potential, and therefore budget deficits, are heavily dependent on oil prices so any further weakening of crude could result in even more withdrawals. Moreover, given the substantial YoY increase, it's important to recall that there are fiscal limits imposed on fund withdrawals equal to 4% of assets, or roughly $36 billion, which could come into play at some point in the future if oil prices remain "lower for longer."

A Florida man has been charged by the Justice Department with a plot to bomb Target stores along the East Coast, and then buy cheap stock after the company stock price plummeted.
Mark Charles Barnett, 48, was charged with making explosive devices, hiring a man to plant them, and attempting to blow up Target stores. The federal complaint alleges the former convicted felon concocted a plan to disguise the bombs as food items and placing them in stores along the East Coast of the US, from New York to Florida.

Reports have been circulating that Trump is circumventing traditional security protocol for his electronic communications by using two separate cell phones. The president seems to have set up a sort of “secret system” with friends and colleagues.
A person who wants to have the president’s ear can simply call and either leave a voicemail on the old phone, or hope that Trump sees the caller ID. If the president so chooses, he will call back from his state-sponsored secure device, bypassing the standard procedure, while still seemingly observing the letter of the law.
Trump needs his own secure system. Because it was the OFFICIAL call that was leaked, not the one on his personal phone.

In a nutshell, water takes a lot of energy to heat up, and air doesn’t contain much. In fact, on a volume/volume basis, the ratio of heat capacities is about 3300 to 1. This means that to heat 1 litre of water by 1?C it would take 3300 litres of air that was 2?C hotter, or 1 litre of air that was about 3300?C hotter!
This shouldn’t surprise anyone. If you ran a cold bath and then tried to heat it by putting a dozen heaters in the room, does anyone believe that the water would ever get hot?

Bureau of Land Management agent Dan Love, a central figure in the government’s case against rancher Cliven Bundy, has been identified as the target of a federal ethics probe in a letter two congressional lawmakers sent to the Office of the Inspector General.
The Feb. 14 letter, sent by U.S. Reps. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, and Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, accuses Love of scrubbing emails, influencing witnesses and deleting hundreds of documents the day before a congressional investigative committee issued a records request. Chaffetz and Farenthold sit on the U.S. House Committee for Oversight and Government Reform.

NASA's Juno probe will not venture any closer to Jupiter, and will stay in its current 53-day orbit for the remainder of its mission. That's due to faulty helium valves in the propulsion system, space boffins announced today.
The spacecraft has been circling the gas giant since July 2016. NASA scientists had planned to fire the engine to reduce its orbit period to 14 days, bringing it closer to Jupiter’s surface to scrutinize the alien world. The more intimate the probe gets with the gas goliath, the more it can peek through the layers of clouds, and study the structure, atmosphere and magnetosphere of the planet.
Well, scratch that. A malfunction with two helium valves in the spacecraft’s main engine has dashed the space agency's confidence in its ability to move Juno closer without losing it completely. There's still plenty of work the craft can do, and simply put, it can't do that if it's out of control or destroyed.

It was with some surprise then when I ran across a monograph published by the prestigious National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), of all places, entitled “Social Media and Fake News in the 2016 Election.” It will cost you $5 if you want to get it from them, so if you want to check what I have to say about the work you need to go to the Stanford University site where one of the paper’s two authors, Matthew Gentzkow, is employed as a professor of economics. The other author, Hunt Allcott, is an economics professor at New York University.
Their paper is long on scholarly trappings, methodological razzle dazzle, and especially on innuendo, but it is very short on good scholarship. Without the insidious, establishment-supporting innuendo, in fact, it really amounts to little more than a showy belaboring of the obvious.
