Reddit Cofounder Says Misogynists on Reddit Are 'Deplorable'

Written by

Jason Koebler

Staff Writer

Reddit knows it has a problem with misogyny, racism, homophobia, and various other forms of bigotry. But Alexis Ohanian, its cofounder and current executive chairman, has few answers, other than to say those who promote hate speech on the site are “deplorable.”
Wednesday at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York City, Ohanian was taken to task by Techcrunch's Alexia Tsotsis for the company's handling of "The Fappening," the series of hacks on celebrities that resulted in nude photos of dozens of actresses being leaked to the internet. Reddit was one of the few places that didn't immediately delete the photos.
After several days and hundreds of millions of pageviews, the company finally changed its policy to disallow the photos, though they are still being uploaded in various subreddits.
He said that once he returned to help run the site with Pao, the company's response to the Fappening was "at the top of the list for us."
"Reddit missed an opportunity to be a leader when that happened," he said, adding that his discussions with Pao led directly to the site eventually banning revenge porn.

"These are things I can't even empathize with as a straight white dude."

More generally, women, people of color, LGBT people, and other minorities are often abused on certain parts of the site. And, even with the revenge porn ban, there's little to suggest that Reddit is going to become the "safe space" that the company said today it wants to be.
Recently, Reddit's interim CEO, Ellen Pao, who lost a gender discrimination suit against her former employer Kleiner Perkins, has been the subject of intense abuse in the comment section of several subreddits (as an aside, Ohanian said he hoped Pao would become the site's permanent CEO).
"Why is the internet so hard on women?" Tsotsis asked Ohanian. "Why is the internet predisposed to railing on women in a way that's inhuman?"
"I would go further to say it's not just women but people of color, LGBT issues, unfortunately, the list goes on," Ohanian said. "The internet as a technology is incredibly liberating because it lets anyone anywhere have a megaphone."

"I really do believe the reasonable voices will win."

"But why do they use that megaphone to tell someone they look fat when they have a photo posted online?" she asked.
"It is deplorable," Ohanian said. "The vast majority of the time, the people using these platforms are good."
Ohanian framed misogyny as more of an internet-wide problem, which, it obviously is—but didn't give any concrete details about what Reddit would be doing to crack down on it. Instead, he buys into the idea that the problem will eventually sort itself out from within.
"I really do believe the reasonable voices will win, but, yes, it's extremely hard, and these are things I can't even empathize with as a straight white dude," he said. "I hope though that we can continue to get better at this. It's going to take a collaborative effort."
Reddit's very ideals are somewhat at odds with each other: In a post today, Reddit said that its "core values" are to "champion diversity" and "give people voices" by "creating a safe space to encourage participation." Meanwhile, the company values the anonymity it bestows on its users and it also wants to "allow freedom of expression" and "be stewards, not dictators. The community owns itself," the company wrote.
And that, in part, is the problem. Reddit is such a huge conglomeration of miniature communities, some of which have values that are overtly racist, homophobic, misogynistic, or creepy. Some of these communities are outright hate groups, and Reddit not only allows them to flourish, but, in fact, believes that they're part of its massive success.
Tsotsis asked Ohanian why Reddit was able to take down Digg, one of its early rivals. His answer was telling—not because it was wrong, but because Reddit's success is built, partly, on allowing people to do whatever the heck they want. He said that Reddit's subreddit system, in which communities can grow more or less under the purview of whoever happened to start it, gave users a more personalized experience.
He said Digg became "way too much noise" as it was all sequestered under one homepage. But Reddit's subreddit system has allowed communities like /r/coontown and /r/gasthekikes to flourish under "moderators" like "GreatApeNiggy," who also runs or moderates no fewer than 90 racist subreddits. Meanwhile, hubs of misogyny like /r/mensrights are moderated by a handful of people who moderate other places that are unsafe for women.
Ohanian is right when he says there's lots of good that happens on Reddit, and often the more mainstream subreddits police themselves (not always though, of course). But if he's going to extol the flexibility and virtues of the subreddit system, he's also got to notice and address its shortcomings: Hateful, abusive content is posted and celebrated constantly on the site, and it often seeps onto the front page—is Reddit going to do anything to stop it? Does it even want to?

Face reality, you sleepy, lazy excuse for a 'journalist':
The people who really need 'safe spaces' in our current environment are those with views you consider offensive.
Feminism doesn't need a 'safe space' - it's the establishment philosophy, embraced by corporate media, government, and academia. Feminism IS the establishment in 2015.
There have been 0 confirmed cases of people being attacked for being a feminist. You will never get in any trouble or face any social repercussions for declaring yourself a 'feminist' - except from other feminists purists.
In 2015, the ONLY ideas that actually need a designated 'safe space' are the 'politically incorrect' ideas that you rail against, that Reddit has created a forum for. Where people can speak their minds freely and anonymously, without fear of harassment or financial repercussions. In other words, a 'safe space' for the people who most need it in our current society.
And you, somehow, see this is a bad thing?

Someone should tell that to all the female CEOs and US presidents we've had...
"There have been 0 confirmed cases of people being attacked for being a feminist."
lol what? Are you being sarcastic or something?

So... what you're saying is that you've never browsed reddit.

So you're saying reddit is the safe space racists deserve? I'd like to see an official statement from reddit on that.

              > Someone should tell that to all the female CEOs and US presidents we've had...
Try as it might, no matter how many policies it produces that advantage women at the expense of men, feminism can't change human nature. Not many women want to take on the gruelling, all consuming, 90 hour a week job that the head of a large organization entails.
              > lol what? Are you being sarcastic or something?
I mean 'attacked,' I don't mean criticized or made fun of. I mean physically hurt or had their life negatively affected in a way that was not 100% self-imposed for victim points, or simply made up (ie brianna wu being chased out of her house while continuing to record interviews from her house).
              > So... what you're saying is that you've never browsed reddit.
anonymous posters that you don't even read doesn't equal 'social repercussion.' Losing your jobs or getting kicked out of university does. You are looking for victimization where it doesn't exist. Perhaps it's your hobby.
              > So you're saying reddit is the safe space racists deserve? I'd like to see an official statement from reddit on that.
Yes. Because if free speech does not apply to unpopular ideas, it's bullshlt.
              > And you see the article's author's criticism as a bad thing? What do you have against free speech?
I'm criticizing the author. I am not attempting to shut him down or screw up his life for what he wrote.

"misogyny" includes supporting boys and men who are victims of sexual and domestic violence, and victims of illegal discrimination.
Thank you to the author for your coverage of the men's rights movement, but I think it's a bit biased. Here are some actual quotes from the reddit men's rights subreddit:
"thought I had to share with the community that gave me a lot." - an abused boy.
"I was actually feeling very depressed and suicidal earlier .. Reading the posts I stumbled upon by accident here has dramatically improved my mood - one less thing that I don't feel so isolated on. Thanks for allowing this community to exist!"
"here you can find help and here we are all brothers and sisters that just want to make the world a better place."
"I want to stand up for mens rights. I grew up very oppressed, but never thought poorly of it that way. I always thought that being a man meant that I was supposed to be seen as a "pig" or worse."
"As a male survivor, I learned early on not to talk about it, because it makes me the butt of jokes and ridicule. It's assumed that I wanted it, it's assumed that I'm supposed to be some kind of insatiable horndog .. Thanks for being there to read a little bit of my f***** up story. Thanks for trying to do something about it. When I can't stand up and talk about it, I'm glad that there are people who will."
"For the last 4 years my Sons Mother has been out of our life. She lives nearby and chooses to have nothing to do with him. .. I have been battling [prejudice] since his mother left when he was 2 years old."
"I want to talk about how I was suckered into a hate movement .. men are the enemy .. Paranoia and irrational hatred drives radical feminism. .. [I left because] I couldn't stay that way with my integrity intact. "
"Hi Guys, I am [Liz] a journalist with a New York based digital news agency launching in two weeks .. For everyone who has responded: THANK YOU SO MUCH. Your stories are amazing and you are all brave to tell them."
"I am a 23 year old man who happens to be gay, I am out and proud but it does not define me. ... I want to say I'm overwhelmed with the positive reasponse, I did not now what to expect after what I was told about the MRM, I'm glad what I was told was wrong! I will be sticking around and contribute where I can."

I'm not involved in MR but it always seems like they were just the flipside of the Equality coin, with the otherside being Feminism. They seem to both be arguing for similar things, but for some reason feminists loathe them and call them "virgin neckbeards" and all that. I don't know how it came to pass that they became enemies but it would have something to do with how one of the sides is not necessarily interested in "equality."

As a homosexual male, let me help you understand: reddit is not homophobic. It's one of the most socially permissive and gay-friendly spaces in the world. A long-running joke about OP's sexual proclivities does not make the site unwelcoming for homosexuals like me. I've been in spaces where the thin-skinned dictate the tone, and I left them. If reddit goes full-SJW, I will leave it too.

Feminism is a female supremacist movement. They have to use double think and criminalize thought crime for it to function. That's why men's equal rights are labelled as "misogyny". It is a mind control tactic to silence through shame. It's time to encourage guys to call their bluff and openly declare that yes they are misogynists. Never concede to these SJW bags of s h i t.

Meanwhile, back in reality land, Reddit has a feminist CEO that quite possibly could face jail over her connections to her husband's shady investment fund, and a very dedicated team of trolls/posters that zip around the site and censor or brigade opinions on behalf of feminism, ie. SRS. In addition, Twitter has a block bot that it handed over wholesale to feminist groups so they could filter Twitter for what they didn't like. That opinion manipulation is being undertaken by these sites is visible and provable, and it's not the men's rights people doing the censoring, it's the feminists. /r/mensrights largely points out hypocrisy, abundant and visible hypocrisy, in society when it comes to men, and one of the biggest aspects of that hypocrisy is that some vocal feminists are claiming abridged victim status while they are the ones holding the levers of expression in their greedy little palms.
Ohanian says, "The vast majority of the time, the people using these platforms are good." and he's clearly correct, but what he's done is decide in advance what constitutes "good", and if you lobby for men's rights or point out societal hypocrisy that damages men, or point out how a small segment of the feminist population has co-opted many of our modern media sources ... then you're not being "good", That's just plain dishonest. Reddit should be a place where I can point out that Anita Sarkeesian hasn't published a single academic paper other than her masters thesis without it being woefully misconstrued as "misogyny". If I can't, then it's clear who really holds the power to censor or manipulate opinion.

What a load of tosh. The Mens Rights reddit is the only place to go to talk about achieving true gender equality. Every feminist controlled place is like stepping back to 1945 and being lined up and shot if you say something out of turn such as mention that men are indeed worthy of rights too and might actually suffer from things as well.

We can openly say whether or not we respect something without fear of reprisal. When someone wants to disrespect someone else, they will work with what they have. When someone stars with "as a woman..." or "as a _______" that is just another item in the toolbox for people to disrespect them. It just so happens that there's more women online who lead with their gender as if it is some sort of validating characteristic or gives them some unique perspective outside of the arguments they are making. That is what happened on 4chan, anyway. It's race/gender/sexuality neutral until someone wants to use it for points.

To completely block the thoughts because you don't like them is to want to thought police. Don't let these authoritarians destroy free expression and assembly; the nature of the internet (which they see as a threat to their control).

So please explain the conclusion you've reached. Looking at /u/annarchist and /u/typhonblue - /r/undeadrights seems to be a relatively safe space, so I'll guess this is directed at /u/annarchist . . . So which one of the subs that she moderates aren't safe spaces? /r/egalitarianism ? /r/Bad_Cop_No_Donut ???

I say this as someone who has a (somewhat dusty) account that is a 6-year-old Reddit Gold Charter Member account. But there's something missing in this take; when he states "is Reddit going to do anything to stop it? Does it even want to? ", He doesn't ask SHOULD Reddit stop it? Which is a bit of a moot point, because Reddit has crossed that Rubicon, and not even with /r/thefappening. It has happened before that. But Koebler seems willing to acknowledge that Reddit's operational philosophy of radical freedom first, regulation when *absolutely necessary* is the reason for it's success. So I think it's a question more in the lines of the recent shooting in Texas at the Muhammed Cartoon Demonstration, namely....

And are we going to hold the tools responsible for the volume, vitriol, and fringe-enabling aspects that they allow to hateful speech? Or, more simply, are we going to shoot the digital messenger?
