Distribution Release: Grml 2017.05 |

The Grml distribution is a live disc based on Debian that includes tools for system administrators for detecting hardware, running tests and rescuing systems. The new version of the distribution, Grml 2017.05, switches from file-rc to systemd for the project's init software. This release also shifts the 32-bit build from i586 to i686. "Switch from file-rc to systemd as init system. grml-live (the build system for creating Grml-based Linux live systems) still supports non-systemd systems using file-rc, though we don't plan to maintain this in the long run. For the reasons why we actually switched to systemd please visit the FAQ. Due to the change to systemd some boot options in the current release might not work as before and some further issues might have been unnoticed yet. Please let us know if you should stumble upon any such issues. Following Debian's switch, the 32-bit PC support (known as the architecture 'i386' and what's provided by 'grml32') now no longer covers a plain i586 processor. The new baseline is the i686, although some i586 processors (e.g. the 'AMD Geode') will remain supported." The project's release notes contain a detailed list of changes since the previous version. Download: grml64-full_2017.05.iso (590MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). Also available from OSDisc. |

Distribution Release: Bodhi Linux 4.2.0 |

|
Jeff Hoogland has announced the release of Bodhi Linux 4.2.0. Bodhi Linux is an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring a fork of the Enlightenment desktop called Moksha. The new version is a minor update to Bodhi Linux and existing users of 4.1.0 will not need to upgrade via new installation media. One of the important changes in 4.2.0 is the dropping of the 32-bit PAE-enabled installation media. Older, 32-bit computers are still supported through Bodhi's Legacy edition: "This is the first release in which we are dropping our 32-bit PAE discs. I would like to clarify that we are still supporting 32-bit computers, but if you need to install the 32-bit version of Bodhi Linux the only version we are preparing is our Legacy ISO image. The Legacy image will work on PAE and non-PAE 32-bit hardware alike. If your computer needs a PAE kernel to utilize all of its memory it is likely better for you to be using a 64-bit operating system anyways. If you do feel the need to use a PAE kernel on a 32-bit operating system with Bodhi though, you can always install the Legacy release and then change kernels afterwards. The release announcement has further details. Download (pkglist): bodhi-4.2.0-64.iso (711MB, MD5, torrent), bodhi-4.2.0-apppack-64.iso (1,293MB, MD5, torrent), bodhi-4.2.0-legacy.iso (663MB, MD5, torrent). Also available from OSDisc. |

Mark Greaves has announced the release of a new version of Peppermint OS, a lightweight distribution based on Lubuntu. The new version, Peppermint OS 8, includes both UEFI and Secure Boot support on 64-bit computers. The project's site Specific Browser feature supports a range of web browsers, including Chromium, Chrome, Firefox and Vivaldi. "Peppermint 8 (Peppermint-8-20170527) highlights: Still based on the 16.04 code base, but now with the 4.8 kernel series and upgraded graphics stack via the HWE offering rolling kernel and graphics stack upgrades as they become available upstream. Mesa 17.0.2 for an improved gaming experience. The Peppermint 8 ISO images now have an 'OEM Install' option, allowing computers to be shipped with Peppermint pre-installed (and with additional software pre-installed) where the user will be prompted for their own language, location, keyboard layout, and account details on first boot, allowing the system configuration to be unique to the new owner. Talking of keyboard layouts, in response to user requests Peppermint 8 now has much improved keyboard layout handling, including the ability to easily configure then swap between multiple layouts from the system tray." Additional features and changes can be found in the release notes. Download (SHA256): Peppermint-8-20170527-amd64.iso (1,227MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Devuan GNU+Linux 1.0.0 |

After approximately two years in development, the Devuan GNU+Linux project has announced the first stable release of the Devuan distribution. Devuan is a fork of Debian with the SysV init software used in place of Debian's systemd package. Services which rely on systemd to function have similarly been replaced with other software offering equivalent functionality. "Many of you might remember November 2014 when we announced that we were going to fork Debian. Well, we have done exactly that. It has been a long process, but now over two years later, we proudly present Devuan 1.0.0. There have been no significant bug reports since RC2 was announced only three weeks ago and the list of release critical bugs is now empty. As promised, this will also be a long-term support (LTS) release. Our team will participate in providing patches, security updates and release upgrades beyond the planned lifespan of Debian 'Jessie'." Additional information can be found in the release announcement. The Devuan torrent file contains all available installation media, but most torrent clients will allow users to select specific files to download. Download: devuan_jessie_1.0.0_amd64_DVD.iso (4,469MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist), devuan_jessie_1.0.0_amd64_NETINST.iso (227MB, SHA256, SHA256). Desktop live DVDs (with Xfce) are also available (SHA256, signature): devuan_jessie_1.0.0_amd64_desktop-live.iso (828MB), devuan_jessie_1.0.0_amd64_uefi_desktop-live.iso (836MB). Donald Stewart has announced that the long-awaited release candidate for Mageia 6 is finally ready for testing: "Everyone at Mageia is exceptionally happy and proud to announce the availability of the release candidate of Mageia 6. It has been a long road, but we are at the last step and Mageia 6 is just around the corner. The extra time that this release has taken has had one huge benefit - the number of new and exciting additions to Mageia is staggering. They include the now far more mature Plasma to replace KDE 4, the dnf and COPR stacks to supplement urpmi, big updates to the major desktops and the other large stacks and components, and lots of package updates. Since Mageia 6 sta 2, a lot of work has been done on the installer, especially regarding the support of proprietary drivers and VirtualBox support." See the full release announcement for more information and an overview of the release. Natanael Copa has announced the release of Alpine Linux 3.6.0. Alpine Linux is an independent, minimal operating system that is well suited to running servers, routers and firewalls. Version 3.6.0 introduces support for 64-bit POWER machines, 64-bit IBM z Systems computers and features many up to date packages, including PHP 7.1, LLVM 4.0 and version 6.3 of the GNU Compiler. "Noteworthy changes: the 'llvm' package has been changed to be provided by a versioned 'llvmX' package, which is presently 'llvm4'; the '-grsec' kernel-related packages have been renamed to '-hardened'. Development-related changes: MD5 and SHA-1 hashes have been removed from APKBUILDs, being obsoleted by SHA-512; 'set -e' is now implied in APKBUILDs, automatically failing the build upon unhandled failing commands; a 'check()' function has been added to APKBUILDs that allows packages to run test suites after 'build()', ensuring no regressions have occurred, this has been implemented for a number of packages, and policy onward will be to have them either be present or explicitly opted-out of with good reasoning." A complete list of changes and credits can be found in the release announcement. The Guix System Distribution (GuixSD) is a GNU/Linux distribution which showcases the Guix advanced package manager. GuixSD runs on the Linux-Libre kernel and features the GNU Shepherd init software. The latest version of GuixSD, 0.13.0, supports booting on UEFI-enabled computers and can be installed on the Btrfs advanced file system. "The GuixSD installation image now supports UEFI. GuixSD can also be installed on Btrfs now. GuixSD has support to run system services (daemons) in isolated containers as a way to mitigate the harm that can be done by vulnerabilities in those daemons. See this article from April. A new guix pack command to create standalone binary bundles is available. We presented it in March. Guix now runs on the brand-new 2.2 series of GNU Guile. The transition led to hiccups that we have been addressing, in particular for users of guix pull. Among other things though, the noticeable performance improvement that comes for free is welcome!" A list of package upgrades and new features can be found in the project's release announcement. Download: guixsd-usb-install-0.13.0.x86_64-linux.xz (190MB, signature, pkglist). |

The first release candidate for Tails 3.0, a Debian-based live DVD specially designed for anonymous web browsing using the included Tor Browser, is now ready for testing. This major update of Tails is based on the soon-to-be-released Debian 9.0 "Stretch" and it features GNOME Shell 3.22 as the preferred desktop: The first release candidate for the upcoming version 3.0 is out. We are very excited and cannot wait to hear what you think about it. Tails 3.0 will be the first version of Tails based on Debian 9 (Stretch). As such, it upgrades essentially all included software. Changes since Tails 3.0-beta4 include: important security fixes; upgrade to current Debian 9 (Stretch); upgrade Tor to 0.3.0.7; upgrade Tor Browser to 7.0a4; migrate from Icedove to Thunderbird (only cosmetic). We will provide security updates for Tails 3.0-rc1, just like we do for stable versions of Tails. But keep in mind that this is a test image. We tested that it is not broken in obvious ways, but it might still contain undiscovered issues." Read the rest of the release announcement for further information. Download: tails-amd64-3.0~rc1.iso (1,161MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). The final release of Tails 3.0 is scheduled for 13 June 2017. |
