An #IAmAMuslimToo march is underway at New York City’s Times Square to protest President Donald Trump’s recent travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries and to highlight interfaith solidarity among the American population.

The so-called 'muslim travel ban' has faced widespread condemnation both at home and abroad and is currently embroiled in legal challenges across the United States with the president vowing to redraft the executive order as early as next week.

Co-hosted by Def Jam's Russell Simmons, together with the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding President Rabbi Marc Schneier and Jamaica Muslim Center’s Imam Shamsi Ali, the event began at the ‘Crossroads of the World’ at noon local time Sunday and was scheduled to continue until 4pm.

"We are here today to show middle America our beautiful signs and, through our beautiful actions and intention, that they have been misled," Simmons told the crowd. "We are here unified because of Donald Trump… We want to thank him for bringing us together."

The hip-hop mogul previously viewed Trump as a long-time friend in a 2011 blog post and the same year arranged a meeting with the billionaire and a select group of interfaith leaders to discuss religious bigotry in the United States.

“Everyone except white privileged males are in immediate danger,” Simmons said in a statement earlier this week. “African-Americans, women, Latinos, Asians and LGBTQ are all at risk, but there is no freedom in that privileged status either because the spirit of the oppressor is oppressed as well. We are living in a time when unity will make America great.”

Schneier, the founder and president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, told AMNY "this rally today is for America. Do you know why? Because any harm that happens to the Muslim community, which is an integral part of this nation, is harm [upon] all Americans."

Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian-American and one of the co-organizers of the Women’s March, was in attendance to show solidarity with other Muslims.

Chelsea and Charlotte Clinton, the daughter and granddaughter of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, were also present at the rally to show support.

Actor and activist Susan Sarandon also spoke at the event, calling for widespread denunciation of the travel ban while urging unity among people of all faiths and backgrounds. “If you are silent then you are complicit,” she told the crowd.

‘No red carpet’: London mayor insists on denying ‘cruel’ Trump state visit

The UK should not be “rolling out the red carpet” for the US President due to his “cruel and shameful” policies targeting Muslims and migrants, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said ahead of Parliament’s debate on Donald Trump’s planned trip this summer.

“I love America, I love Americans and I believe the special relationship is a good one and one that’s here to stay. But when you’re mates with somebody, when you’ve got a special relationship, of course you are side-by-side with them in times of adversity but when they are wrong you call them out,” said Khan, who is the first ethnic minority and Muslim mayor of London, on ITV’s political discussion program Peston on Sunday.

“I think this ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries, ending the refugee program is cruel and it’s shameful. In those circumstances we shouldn’t be rolling out the red carpet,” he continued.

Khan’s statement comes a day before British lawmakers debate an online petition urging a downgrade of Trump’s UK visit. The appeal states that Trump should be allowed to “enter the UK,” but “should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen.”

Anti-Trump protesters are expected to gather outside Parliament during the debate on Monday.

Trump was invited to the UK by Prime Minister Theresa May who faced harsh criticism for the move, dubbed too premature.

Trump, whose first actions in office are widely viewed as controversial, needed only seven days to draw an official invite. By comparison, former President Barack Obama received his invitation to London only 758 days after his inauguration, and his predecessor, George Bush, waited 978 days before being invited.

State visits usually imply significant expenditure and include a stay at Buckingham Palace.

The petition was filed as early as November, right after Trump’s election victory, however, it began garnering hundreds of thousands of signatures as soon as Trump signed the US travel ban restricting citizens from seven Muslim countries from entering the US.

The executive order, intended to boost US security, according to the White House, hasn’t been enforced as it's currently embroiled in legal challenges across the US with the president vowing to redraft the executive order as early as next week.

By February 20, which marks 30 days in office for Trump, over 1,850,000 people have spoken against an official state visit to the UK.

US urges China to keep pressure on N. Korea, as Beijing stops coal imports from Pyongyang

The US has called on Beijing to keep the pressure on North Korea, as Chinese authorities announced they were suspending all coal deliveries from Pyongyang.

“All countries should fully and transparently implement all relevant UN Security Council Resolutions on the DPRK,” a US State Department spokesperson said, referring to North Korea, as cited by Reuters.

“We continue to urge China to exert its unique leverage as North Korea's largest trading partner to convince Pyongyang to return to serious talks on denuclearization,” the official added.

The US rhetoric against North Korea has been harsh for quite a while, but has intensified recently. Last week, US President Donald Trump said at a press conference that “obviously North Korea is a big, big problem and we will deal with that very strongly.”

Beijing tends to disagree, though, with Fu Ying, who chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee of China’s legislature and served as vice foreign minister until 2013, saying at the Munich Security Conference: “China just keeps on telling you this is not working, although we’re going along with you. You have to realize – without talking with them, you will only drive them in the wrong direction further.”

Even Beijing’s patience seems to be running out, as the Chinese Commerce Ministry said that it would stop all coal imports from North Korea. The prohibition is set to stay in place until December 31.

Just over a week ago, Yonhap News Agency reported that a delivery of North Korean coal worth about $1 million was stopped at the Port of Wenzhou in eastern China.

The rejection of the coal cargo followed the North Korean test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile.

About a week ago, North Korea reported test firing a new Pukguksong-2 ballistic missile, praising it as a key achievement for its military. The solid-propellant rocket flew over 500km before landing in the Sea of Japan. Last April, Beijing already declared it would curb coal deliveries to comply with the UN sanctions, but imports for “people’s well-being” would continue. As of last year, North Korea was China’s fourth biggest supplier of coal.

US aircraft carrier group deployed for ‘routine patrols’ in S. China Sea

Ignoring repeated warnings from Beijing not to aggravate tensions in Southeast Asia, the US Navy has deployed an aircraft carrier strike group for “routine” maritime patrols in the vicinity of the disputed South China Sea waters.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, together with aircraft from the Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer started “routine operations in the South China,” the US Navy announced.

The deployment of the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1 began Saturday, just days after China issued a stern warning to stay away from the area.

“China has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters,” China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Wednesday. “China respects and upholds the freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea which countries enjoy under international law, but firmly opposes any country’s attempt to undermine China’s sovereignty and security in the name of the freedom of navigation and overflight.”

Despite the warning, US patrols got underway in the disputed waters, right after an American flotilla held drills off the islands of Hawaii and Guam to “maintain and improve their readiness and develop cohesion as a strike group.”

“The training completed over the past few weeks has really brought the team together and improved our effectiveness and readiness as a strike group,” said Rear Adm. James Kilby, commander of CSG 1. “We are looking forward to demonstrating those capabilities while building upon existing strong relationships with our allies, partners and friends in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.”

As tensions between US and China intensify, the US Navy appears to continue disregard Beijing’s interests in the immediate proximity of the disputed islands, claiming the moves are designed to ensure the principles of freedom of navigation in international waters.

The Spratly Islands, or Spratlys, comprise more than 750 islets, atolls, and reefs, and lie off the coastlines of Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and China, with all the claimants having their own national names for the archipelago. Beijing persists in claiming the reefs in defiance of a ruling issued by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) at the Hague.

While freedom of navigation and military drills accelerated under President Barack Obama's administration, Trump and his team appear to be heading on a collision course with China.

US-China relations, already frosty over the disputed South China Sea islands, became more strained after Trump’s phone conversation with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, which immediately followed the Republican’s victory. The exchange infuriated Beijing, who considered it running against the bilateral protocol of the so-called 'One-China' policy, under which Washington views Taiwan as part of China.

And just over the last two weeks, both Trump and James Mattis, the current US Secretary of Defense, vowed to protect Japan in any territorial disputes it has with China in the East China Sea.

The situation has been further exacerbated by China’s militarization of the South China Sea. Chinese State media Xinhua announced on Friday that China's Navy had completed a week-long exercise there. The “scheduled” maneuvers entailed sudden attack drills and had three Chinese warships participating, including a destroyer.

Iraq launches operation to retake western Mosul from ISIS

Iraqi forces have launched a major military operation to retake the western part of Mosul from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced.

“We announce the start of a new phase in the operation, we are coming to Nineveh to liberate the western side of Mosul,” Abadi said in a brief televised address, referring to the province of which Mosul is the capital, AFP quoted.

“Our forces are beginning the liberation of the citizens from the terror of Daesh,” Abadi added.

On Saturday, Iraqi aircraft dropped millions of leaflets in western Mosul, calling on residents to get ready to welcome the Iraqi troops as they continue the siege on the militants.

“Your armed forces... are advancing in the direction of the right side, relying on God. Get ready to welcome the sons of your armed forces and to cooperate with them, as your brothers on the left side have done, in order to reduce losses and speed up the conclusion” of the battle, one of the leaflets read, as cited by Reuters.

Other leaflets were aimed at IS members, urging them to “lay down their weapons and surrender,” according to the defense ministry’s statement.

Also on Saturday, the US-led coalition said that they had destroyed the de facto command center of IS in Mosul, a building in the main medical complex. The terrorists denied that the Friday strike was effective, and claimed it killed 18 people, most of them women and children, and wounded 47 others.

After the fall of Iraq's second largest city in June 2014, government forces, aided by US air power and Kurdish militia on the ground, have tried relentlessly to take the city back.

The latest operation to free the city from the jihadists began on October 17. After months of fighting, the coalition managed to secure the east bank of the city last month. The densely-populated west bank of Mosul is now the operation's target.

Around 750,000 people still remain in western Mosul, according to UN estimates. Electricity, food, and water shortages have placed the population on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe.

No need to include US in Ukraine peace talks, German FM says

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel says he sees no need to add the US to the current format of four-way ministerial meetings concerning the Ukraine settlement, noting, however, that close contact with Washington on the matter is “necessary.”

There must be close contact with the United States, but we think this [Normandy] format... should be maintained,” Gabriel said after he met with his Russian, French, and Ukrainian counterparts on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. The Minister added that the matter had been discussed with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and that he had “agreed with this.”

There have been reports of possible expansion of the four-way Normandy format by adding other countries to the peace process in the east of Ukraine, primarily the US. Most recently, former Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk said that the Normandy format must be taken to a new “higher level” with the participation of the US.

Ukraine's representative to the Trilateral Contact Group for Donbass (the name commonly used for the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine), former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, said in December last year that Russia's stance was an obstacle to including the US in the Normandy format.  However, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said that Moscow does not oppose the inclusion of other countries, including the US, in the talks.

Germany, France, Russia, and Ukraine on Saturday talked mostly of the recent escalation in eastern Ukraine and ways to stem the violence. The sides agreed to use their influence to introduce a new ceasefire and facilitate the withdrawal of heavy weapons in the region starting Monday.

“We have reached several agreements. All sides have agreed to use their influence to implement the decisions made by the trilateral contact group on February 15,” Sigmar Gabriel said, as cited by Reuters. The group comprises Ukraine, Russia, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and aims to facilitate the peace process.

“The aim is to have a ceasefire starting from February 20 and to do what has long been agreed but never implemented: to withdraw the heavy weapons from the region, to secure them and enable the OSCE monitors to control where they are kept,” Gabriel added. He noted also that the Normandy group will meet again soon to start preparing the launch of the political settlement process.

We are going to meet in a few weeks for preparations of the political process, which will be the hardest task. But the political process cannot be started without a ceasefire and pullout of heavy weapons,” the minister concluded.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday that Russia has been actively supporting the decision to introduce an immediate ceasefire.

On February 20 the ceasefire regime will start and withdrawal of heavy military hardware will also start... We have actively supported this decision and obviously expressed a conviction that this time, failure should not be allowed,” Lavrov said after talks with his counterparts, adding that he believed both Kiev and the rebels would abide by the February 20 date. He noted, however, that the talks failed to bring about all the anticipated results.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said he was “not at all” happy with Saturday’s talks and complained about a lack of “powerful results,” speaking to Reuters after the ministerial meeting.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the meeting showed the Minsk deal was seen as the only way to peace in Ukraine.

The meeting showed that Russians and Ukrainians had no other option but to respect Minsk. They have no alternatives. We agree to meet quickly, perhaps in three weeks, to see if we can advance on the ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons and exchange of prisoners. We need a lot of patience, because we can see a lack of will on either side,” Ayrault said.

Kiev authorities launched their military operation against militias in the Donbass region after the coup in Kiev in 2014. In 2015, the two sides reached a ceasefire deal brokered by the leaders of the Normandy Four and signed the Minsk peace agreement, the main document currently regulating peace efforts in eastern Ukraine. It calls for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the contact line, and constitutional reform, aimed mostly at expanding the autonomy of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

Throughout 2016, the Normandy Four, as well as the OSCE, stressed the need to implement the Minsk agreements, but Kiev has stalled these efforts, refusing to grant Donbass special status. The effort is also being held up by a resurgence in fighting. Since the end of January, shelling on both sides of the contact line near the government-held town of Avdeevka has been heavier than at any time since the summer of 2016, according to the OSCE.

Russia & Turkey-brokered Syria ceasefire has more chances than any other – UN Syria envoy

UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura has praised the joint efforts of Russia and Turkey to broker peace in Syria, and has urged the international community to support it.

“The ceasefire is holding more than previous ones,” de Mistura said at the Munich Security Conference, “and in my modest opinion has, if we all look at it carefully and support it, more chances to actually succeed than others.”

This is because, according to de Mistura, both Russia and Turkey have the assets in Syria needed to “exercise leverage, which is a crucial point.”

There is a mechanism being established to monitor and support the ceasefire, de Mistura said. “That's why we have been supporting Astana, and the meetings in Astana, of course based on the assumption that they are surgical, laser-beamed on a very important issue: establishing, stabilizing and reinforcing the cessation of hostilities.”

De Mistura believes that Russian and Turkish brokering helped avoid the worst possible scenario for the battle of Aleppo.

“There were not-so-secret meetings in Ankara, and those meetings produced discussions between armed groups and Russian military which avoided – people sometimes forget it – the final, the worst part, of the battle of Aleppo.

"Which would have led to the total distruction of the city plus 110,000-115,000 between refugees and dead people."

The Astana talks, however, have failed to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria so far, de Mistura said.

“When the war stops, in theory we should have humanitarian access. This has not yet taken place. But I know, and we push for that to be one of the consequences, collateral benefits rather than collateral damage, of the cessation of hostilities discussed in Astana.”

But including armed rebels in the talks was a great achievement.

“We have seen armed groups be present, and not actually being called terrorists, but actually being treated as interlocutors and sitting and discussing with the other side under the guarantors of the ceasefire, which is as you know Turkey, Russian Federation and I would say also Iran.”

While there has been considerable progress, the situation is “not perfect,” de Mistura said. One of the reasons is the still-present Al-Nusra Front terrorist group, which is “a spoiling element.”

Another is the various sides' efforts to improve their chances in combat, which they still consider an option.

“The temptation by the government to want to accelerate, as it is happening while we are talking, facts on the ground, in order to be in a better position on what is still a possible military option, and the decision by the opposition to negotiate when they believe they are not in an ideal military position, is still a potential spoiling element.”

De Mistura said that he was unsure of the exact role the US might play in any future peace settlement, but posited that Washington will likely stick to their set of priorities.

“I understand that they do have in mind some clear priorities, and they are three,” he explained. “One is fighting Daesh [Islamic State]; second, how to limit the influence of some regional players, you know; and three, how to not actually damage one of their major allies in the region.”

During a panel discussion after de Mistura's address, Brett McGurk, the White House envoy to the US-led military coalition against IS, agreed with de Mistura’s assessment that Russian and Turkish participation is key to ending the crisis in Syria.

“I was here last year in Munich, and one of the reasons that [2016’s peace] process did not succeed as we had hoped is frankly because we were a guarantor, and Russia was a guarantor,” he said. “It turns out when the US is a guarantor, we don’t have people on the ground and we became a bit of a Ping-Pong ball to try and control the situation.”

“Turkey and Russia are suitable guarantors, and we are looking for a role [in which] the US can come in and help reinforce that process through Astana.”
