What is GamerGate?

Our Mission

We believe that the current standard of ethics in the gaming industry is unhealthy to itself, and to gamers. We have taken notice to various conflicts of interest, and wish to address these in hopes that the gaming industry can change, in order to retain the trust of its concerned consumers.
We believe gaming is an inclusive place, and wish to welcome all who want to take part in an amazing hobby. We welcome artistic freedom and equal opportunities for creators and creations. We condemn censorship, exclusion, harassment, and abuse.
This is a community for discussion of these issues, and for organizing campaigns for reform, so that the industry can be held accountable for its actions and gamers can enjoy their medium without being unjustly attacked or slandered.

Hey Brim, any chance you can x post this to /r/thecommentgraveyard I'm trying to get it built up to be a resource for sites selectively moderating comments etc. I know it deserves to be here as well, just think a place dealing with that phenomena exclusively could be beneficial.
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S] 27 points28 points29 points  (6 children)
Done.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points  (5 children)
thanks!
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S,M] 0 points1 point2 points  (4 children)
Also, have some flair.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points  (3 children)
Thanks for that ;) you're awesome
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (2 children)
Yeah, I actually set it yesterday, I just forgot to mention it. >_>
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
I noticed it, just was unsure of who to thank for it. I really do appreciate it.
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
If it's flair it's usually me.
Usually sometimes.
[–]Nonbeing 5 points6 points7 points  (2 children)
PSA: your comment is probably going to get Automod deleted because it is linking directly to another subreddit (doesn't matter if the link is a self promotion, it's a blanket KiA guideline to safeguard us from accusations of brigading)
You might want to just edit out the direct link and post it as plain text like this: r/thecommentgraveyard
[–]therapistofpenisland 15 points16 points17 points  (0 children)
You can link to subreddits, just not to posts.
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S,M] 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Mods can override automod when he screws up. Plus I think we got him straightened out.
[–]Just_made_this_now 70 points71 points72 points  (1 child)
The mental image of Pao sitting in her chair at a Starbucks somewhere with a frappacino in one hand and a metaphorical ban hammer in the other, staring intently at her Macbook, shadowbanning users mentioning her name in a negative light, is somewhat hilarious, yet sad...

[–]szopin 61 points62 points63 points  (0 children)
Thread about it in bestof got delisted, lolol

Full chain, for hilarious added context:

Reddit is turning into a giant hugbox where any opposing and non-PC comments will be moderated. Thanks to SRS like SJWs many users turn to sites that actually value freedom of speech and free discussions, such as voat or 8chan.

I was about to say "except places like coontown still exist" but then I came to a small realization, they're not there as containment subs, they are there to provide the daily 15 minutes of hate to the good users, they are there to give a reason for the efforts.
[–]diversity_is_racism 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Reddit is turning into a giant hugbox where any opposing and non-PC comments will be moderated.
That's their audience: unstable urban teenage males who want a hugbox to reassure them that the world is not failing as it appears to be.
Their product is denial with the pretense of education/science/enlightenment behind it.
[–]sweatyhole 39 points40 points41 points  (2 children)
Can't have a tyrant like that in a safe space.

Since you're the first person to comment, let's go meta-archival and archive this reddit post, shall we?
[–]itsinthebone 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Good thing there's play-doh and Dvd videos of puppies.
[–]based_nerdPicklefucker 17 points18 points19 points  (3 children)
I think they're well aware that they hold unpopular ideas and will soon cause a big shit storm.
I can't fuckin' wait. It's been nice knowing ya ladies and gentleman. We'll find each other some how.

Switzerland?
[–]Petrarch1603 15 points16 points17 points  (2 children)
Has Ellen Pao ever done an AMA? I would like to see that. With all this talk of transparency, that would be a good step forward.
[–]itsinthebone 12 points13 points14 points  (1 child)
Never happen. Or if it did, it would be so censored it would look like FBI documents relating to JFKs assassination
[–]Mondayexe 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Or it would be another graveyard of deleted comments.
[–]DoctorBarkanine 14 points15 points16 points  (0 children)
frickin_lahey
Admins generally don't discuss the reasons for a SB publically
But, transparency!?!
Reddit is only transparent when they want to be...
[–]nightmare901 14 points15 points16 points  (0 children)
In other news, I'm choking on the irony.
[–]ToTTenTranz 13 points14 points15 points  (2 children)
Buddy Fletcher, husband of Reddit CEO Ellen Pao, is being described as being the operator of Ponzi scheme
~144 million dollars of a pension fund was lost
Ellen Pao is now accused of frivolous lawsuits.
I just had to do my part..

UNPERSON
[–]altshiftM 14 points15 points16 points  (1 child)
I wonder if commenting on Ellen Pao in any sort of perceived negative way is grounds for a shadowban.
[–]matthewhaleSurvived #GGinDC 2015 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
Chairman Pao is best Pao!
[–]thehighground 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
What I find amazing is how everyone can see what those lawsuits were about yet reddit seems to ignore this fact and continues to giver such a large platform over which she can exert control.
Once it was discovered she personally did this or even directed someone to take care of negative links against her she should have been suspended.
This is the kind of executive BS that piss everyone off.
[–]butchoBen Kuchera did nothing wrong 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Alright:
Buddy Fletcher, husband of Reddit CEO Ellen Pao, is being described as being the operator of Ponzi scheme ~144 million dollars of a pension fund was lost Ellen Pao is now accused of frivolous lawsuits to try and stay afloat and some other shit. Seeing as she is a CEO of a large company and has a fraudster for a husband I think it's safe to say we have a textbook ASPD/Sociopath on our hands
[–]ZimeaglaZ 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
It was reposted to bestof and worstof. That probably doesn't happen often.
[–]inkjetlabel 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
My first thought: Look, it's the Hallow.
My second thought: No more Terraria for you. :(
[–]Skiddywinks 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
Snagged my username on voat because of this.
I'm ready for The Fall.
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Same here. Though I don't have mod over there for some reason...
[–]skidles 1 point2 points3 points  (5 children)
I'm not 100% sure I believe he was banned. I think deleting his account would look identical, and it does seem just too convenient. Also, I don't know if I can believe mods/admins would actually be dumb enough to make someone's point for them like that.
[–]XavierMendelWrites for TechRaptor, did modtalkleaks 23 points24 points25 points  (0 children)
Deleted accounts show the comment author as [deleted], shadowbanned shows the name but the profile is empty. It is definitely a shadowban.
As for what they're thinking: "What're they gonna do about it?"
[–]fr_automatik 32 points33 points34 points  (1 child)
Someone from the archive:
Is it possible /u/swagmaster4204204200 deleted their account?
No, the name in the comment would not appear if that was the case.
Its possible they did it on purpose, like did this, then went and broke the rules, but there is no way to really tell. shrug
Normally I try to defend the admins, but this is either hilariously timed, or something darker
And then /u/swagmaster4204204204 replied :
Yeah I definitely did not do that, but they probably found a reason to ban me since I had questionable activity. I don't care though for reasons I already posted. I hope we all had fun in this thread. Thanks for the transparency Ellen POW
[–]skidles 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
Wow...
[–]thehighground 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
You obviously haven't been paying attention the last few months, a lot of links involving her or her husbands bullshit have been getting deleted.
One was deleted because it wasn't newsworthy even though it was linked to a major newspaper, you would think a CEOs shenanigans of the most visited news aggregation website would be very newsworthy. Or maybe they just want it never mentioned, I find it funny that someone who works for a site such as reddit would have no clue how the internet works.
[–]ITSigno 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
I'm actually inclined to suspect that he was already shadowbanned but the mods (admins) manually approved that comment.
I mean, it's no more bizarre than them shadowbanning him for the comment and leaving the comment itself in place.
[–]GG234 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
I don´t get why we don´t just move our activity to a site like GamerGate.me. Surely there should be someone who could make a similar structure for a forum on mentioned site? It seems to me Reddit isn´t a very welcoming place for GG, despite the good treatment of certain individuals.
[–]non_consensual 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
We do it for advertisement. Reddit has millions of users. Every time we spill out into another subreddit we gain members.
[–]lonmoer 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I knew that would happen to someone.
[–]merrickx 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Is it certain this user was shadowbanned for that comment, specifically. I wouldn't doubt if it wasn't the fact that people are often mistakenly identified as shadowbanned for saying something "controversial," when they were actually shadowbanned recently beforehand.
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Well, do a user's pre-SB comments get thrown down the memory hole, or is it only their post-SB comments?
I'm pretty sure it's the former.
[–]vicedets 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
They gave us the transparency we asked for. I think this makes everything MUCH more clear and open
[–]BrimshaeSun Tzu VII:35 / Survived #GGinDC 2015[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
You know, I didn't think of it like that.
You bring up an excellent, if slightly worrying point.
